The city of Pittsburgh, PA is filled with ways to have fun—shops, restaurants, museums, theaters, parks, trails, events… and so much more. The ongoing health crisis, however, has left many attractions and businesses temporarily closed, and placed restrictions on many others. Not to worry, though; there are still tons of ways to have fun in Pittsburgh while social distancing.
Things to Do in Pittsburgh While Social Distancing
Whether your favorite attractions are closed or you’re simply trying to do your part to slow the spread of disease, you might be wondering how you can get out of the house and have some fun in Pittsburgh while social distancing. Fortunately, you’ll probably find you have more options than you’d think.
Here are some of our favorite socially distanced things to do in Pittsburgh.
Visit a local park
Parks are a great way to get out of the house, and depending on the park, there are an infinite number of activities to enjoy. Connect with nature on a scenic hiking trail at Riverview Park or explore the beautiful gardens of Highland Park. Take your furry friend on a walk at South Park, or bring your paddling skills to North Park. You might simply stroll down to your neighborhood park for a game of ball or a picnic in the grass.
Partake in an urban scavenger hunt
Every day at 1:30pm, four Pittsburgh neighborhoods play host to an urban scavenger hunt. Participants travel a nine-mile loop via bike or car to find six destinations, many of which have historical significance to the city. Events start in Lawrenceville and feature finds such as public art, historic relics, and two Guinness Book of World Records locations. Two additional hunts have been added, one a 1.5-mile walkable hunt and the other a larger 15-miler focused on public art.
ID some local birds
Looking for a peaceful afternoon activity? Give birding a try; the Audubon Society has a free app that features over 800 species of North American birds, and the Pittsburgh area has quite a few parks filled with wildlife. Birders find Three Rivers Heritage Trail, Wingfield Pines Conservation Area, Boyce Park, and North Park to be especially fruitful.
Support a local performer
One of the things that draws so many to Pittsburgh is its rich arts and cultural scene. Live theatre and live music are a huge part of Pittsburgh’s entertainment, but social distancing has made that difficult for many performers and venues.
However, many are adapting to bring their art and entertainment online or outside. If you’re looking for something laid back and fun to fill your weekend, consider catching an online performance by the Pittsburgh Public Theatre, which is hosting an online series called PlayTime. You can also bring the movies home with online cinema at Row House Cinema; you might also want to stop by for curbside popcorn, candy, and beverage pickups.
